1 1a. Purfürst Families of the World

The documents that follow below have been extracted from the two volume, 1800 page history on the Purfürst Families of the World, currently being developed by the website owner. The volumes encompass all known worldwide locations of the surname including its Anglicized variations of Purfurst, Purfuerst and Purfeerst. The volumes also include histories on Allied surnames of interest to include Bostwick, Johnson, Keller, Tanguay and Weiss.

The first group of documents provide historical information on such topics as the Purfürst surname itself, the lands where early families originated and the many German cities where archive or parish records on the families were found.

The second grouping of documents pertain to specific family groups and the locations where a Purfürst immigrant first established residence after leaving the German homeland. The Histories are listed in alphabetical sequence in acordance with the worldwide geographical location: the America state and the foreign country. The Description column will identify the Surname(s) to which that particular history applies.

Select a Surname from the right column to see the family data associated with the individual as well as any family photographs, if available.

2 3a. German History

All of the early Purfürst ancestors thus far identified lived the southern most areas of the adjacent present-day German states of Saxony and Thuringia, near their common boundary with the German state of Bavaria and the country of The Czech Republic.

This document, beginning in the third century, will provide a history of the European area currently known as Germany.

3 3b. German History - Purfürst Surname

This research has centered on the families whose surnames are an Anglicization of the original surname of Purfürst, which exists in Germany yet today.

The Purfürst name is a “High German” variation of the original name Burgfürst. The term “High German” applies to dialects spoken in areas of Germany south of an imaginary geographic line extending from the French border near Strasburg to the German city of Hof on The Czech Republic border.

The surname Burgfürst is known to have existed as early as the year 1321 and translates to “The First Man on The Castle”, usually a Knight serving a king or duke. For a commoner it could simply mean a man who lived at the top (the “First”) of the hill.

This document will describe the history of the areas in which the ancestors lived as well as the history behind the surname.

4 3c. German History - Nobility

Family lore resulting from the research of a Purfürst family that had emigrated to London told that the Purfürst surname evolved from the name Von Purfürsling. An American census record pertaining to a later family residing in Brooklyn reflected the name of Van Barfurst

The German system of nobility is quite different from the English system with which most Americans are familiar.

This document will detail the German nobility concept and explain how it applies to the Purfürst surname.

7 3f. German History - Dr. Martin Luther

Many of our German ancestors came from the German village of Neustadt an der Orla. Dr. Martin Luther was the district Vicar of ten Thuringan monasteries during the period 1515-1518, including the one at Neustadt. In the performance of this function he would have visited Neustadt many times. On at least one occasion, August 23, 1524, he was known to have preached within the family church which was for purposes of counteracting a nearby minister who was causing unrest.

This document will cover the life of Dr. Luther and his Relgious Reformation.

11 3j. Biblical Genealogy ......... and ......... Connection to American Presidents and European Monarchs

Some people trace their ancestors to satisfy a requirement of their religion while others do it to satisfy their own curiosity. Regardless of the reason, the ultimate is to be able to trace your ancestors back to the creation of Adam.

This document accomplishes that objective.

The author's ancestors began arriving in early in the colonial period (1630 -). Subsequent American-born descendants of those emigrant ancestors included 14 Presidents of the United States, signers of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution as well as numerous notable citizens such as aviation pioneers Wilbur and Orville Wright, Confederate Commander Robert E. Lee and General of the Army Douglas McArthur.

Those same 17th century emigrant ancestors left behind in their home nations, unbroken ancestral lines that stretched back to Constitutional and Absolute Monarchy rulers in various European nations. Succession to the throne in those nations was typically hereditary. Therefore, identifying one occupant of the throne will generally identify the preceding and subsequent occupants of that throne. For they and others select from the adjacent column:

* Ferqus Mo MacErca, 1st King of Scotland, 131st King of Ireland (501- )
* Charlemagne, King of the Franks (predecessor to France) (742-813)
* William, I, "William the Conqueror", King of England (1028-1087)
* Isabella, Queen of Spain (1451-1504) - Sponsored Christopher Columbus
* Myles Standish (1584-1656) - Captain of the Mayflower
* Arthur Bostock (1603-1680) - Gr x 9 Great-Grandfather
* Thomas Jefferson, 3rd President of the United States (1743-1826)
* Winston Churchill, Prime Minister of England (1874-1965)
* Princess Diana Spencer (1961-1997)
